What was so special about Viking ships? – Jan Bill

Explore the history and technology of Viking longships, which helped the Scandinavians conquer trade routes and new territories.

As the Roman Empire flourished, Scandinavians had small settlements and no central government. Yet by the 11th century, they had spread far from Scandinavia, gaining control of trade routes throughout Europe, conquering kingdoms as far as Africa, and building outposts in North America. What was the secret to their success? Jan Bill dives into the history of the formidable Viking longship.

Why expats should be able to vote | Christian von Wartburg | TEDxBaselWomen

For centuries race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and origin have been used to deny equal rights, equal access, and equal dignity. When we talk about political representation today, we should emphasize, on what we have in common and not on what divides us. Dr. Christian von Wartburg is a lawyer specialized in Criminal Defense. He studied Law in Geneva, Basel and St. Gallen graduated with a doctorate degree. Currently he presides the parliamentary Audit Commission, which supervises the local Government. He also holds a teaching position at the University of Berne for Criminal Aspects of the Swiss Narcotics Act and is Vice-President of the trinational Conseil Rhénan. Outside of work he is a happy Patchwork-Family man and enjoys to spend Time in the Swiss Alps. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
